English Electric Lightning Over Wing Tanks

Lightning F6 over-wing tanks could each carry 260 gallons (2000lbs) of fuel. They were used predominantly for overseas deployments, though all pilots did sorties with tanks for handling qualities. The tanks were able to be jettisoned but had to be empty of fuel first, if jettisoned with fuel they may damage the airframe. The tanks had explosive bolts that opened vents allowing the fuel to be dumped, at a speed of no more than 220 knots. Time to empty the tanks was four minuets, two minuets to empty and two minutes for the vapour/residual fuel to clear. Once empty they were able to be jettisoned in level flight at no more than 250knots.
